CHALLENGE:
To design a visually engaging poetry broadside poster that uses symbolism to convey the message and theme of the poem. The subject matter will come from a chosen poem and the designer’s job is to find a deeper message or concept to convey through this poster. Every visual choice should be intentional and relate back to this core concept. The final poster should be compelling enough to grab the target audience’s attention from 25 feet, 5 feet, and 5 inches.
SOLUTION:
I selected this poem because I instantly visualized the imagery and it reminded me of my childhood as we had multiple large citrus trees in my backyard. My interpretation of “Under the Lemon Tree” showcases loss and grief as the woman is reminiscing about her late mother’s connection to a lemon tree. The poem compares the circle of life between the natural world and humans. The final imagery uses two infinity symbols that are morphed and interwoven with each other. This represents the renewal of life in both nature and humans. This concept of regenerative quality is also reinforced with the color palette including shades of greens and browns.
